Lymphedema treatment

Lymphedema may be treated or controlled by specially trained therapists with a combination of the following techniques:

  • Manual Lymph Drainage – Specialized massage techniques are utilized to assist with moving the fluid and proteins out of the swollen area. This helps to channel fluid around missing or damaged lymph nodes to functioning nodes. Can also help to develop alternate pathways or lymph channels.
  • Compression Bandaging/Wrapping – Multi-layered bandaging is applied to the arm or leg to further assist with decreasing fluid.
  • Sequential Pneumatic Pump – An air-filled sleeve fits over the arm or leg and air is pumped into the sleeve to apply pressure to the swollen area to help move the fluid out of the area.
  • Fitting with a Compression Garment – Once the swelling has been reduced and stabilized, the patient may be fit with a sleeve for the affected arm or leg to help maintain the decrease in swelling.
  • Education – Provided in the areas of skin care, self-massage, self-wrapping, exercise and prevention of lymphedema.
  • Exercise – An exercise program is designed to assist with regaining range of motion, strength and assisting with flow of fluid.
